About Us
I have been in the construction business since the late 70’s, working for various contractors in high school and college that worked with my father, an architect in Savannah, GA. After undergraduate school, I began work in Jacksonville, Florida with a large production homebuilder as an estimator and purchasing agent for the construction of over 1,000 homes per year.
After working in homebuilding for two years, I returned to graduate school at Texas A&M University, graduating in August of 1992 with a Masters of Science in Construction Management. Following graduation, I moved to Washington, DC to work for a large construction management firm, 3D/International, from 1992 to 1998. In 1998, I joined Barton Malow Company in Atlanta. At these two companies, I was a Project Manager and a Business Developer.

Testimonials:
I hired Gunn Construction and Development for the renovation and design of a new facility for my Mercedes-Benz repair business. It was not a large project by any means, but was always treated as it was their most important project. Rett Gunn and his group of managers and contractors diligently and smoothly worked with through several unforeseen issues that arose during the renovation process. They responded quickly to any requests or changes made by myself mid-construction. The project was completed ahead of schedule and on budget.
Since the completion of this facility I have hired Gunn Construction and Development for a fairly simple storm damage repair and was again impressed with Rett’s attention level and response time. Knowing that I didn’t have to worry about getting my building back together allowed the business to get back on track almost immediately. Because of my experiences with Rett Gunn and Gunn Construction, any future construction project I endeavor to tackle will include them.

I want to let you know that I have worked with Rett Gunn the last six years as an outside contractor and as a coordinator of the Philips Arena. He has impeccable integrity and delivers what he is asked to do as a contractor. He also has done many projects for the Georgia World Congress Center and completed them on time and under budget.

This reference letter is provided at the request of Rett Gunn of Gunn Construction and Development, who has asked me and my architecture firm, ai3 to serve as a reference on his behalf. It is my understanding that Gunn Construction and Development is being considered by your organization as a potential General Contractor for a two story office building.
I have known Rett Gunn for approximately the past 18 months. Our two firms worked together on the design and construction of the Addition to the Steam Company Pub in Athens, Georgia. The project involved the conversion of a restaurant into a music venue in the heart of downtown Athens, raising the roof and adding a mezzanine level for additional seating. Special attention had to be paid to maintain the integrity and character of the surrounding complex.
The project, although small in size, was complicated in nature due to tight site logistics, a very short construction schedule, and construction of the addition while portions of the pub continued to operate. Rett was able to handle multiple trades on site at the same time with ease, all the while remaining true to the design intent of the drawings and its detailing.
From a project management aspect, Rett brings large firm process and protocol and successfully blend them with the personal touches of a small firm. Rett was continually on-site, overseeing the construction, proactively identifying adverse site issues, and managing the submittal process. In general, I believe that Rett handled the project with care and finesse, meeting the initial budget. I would recommend them for other projects in the future.

Atlantic Station in Atlanta is one of the largest smart growth and sustainable developments in the country. It’s a 130 acre development in the heart of Atlanta and is designed to be a blend of middle and upper income housing with restaurants, retail and entertainment. Our office teamed up with Gunn Construction and Development, Inc. in a design build joint venture to provide the central energy plant for this new development.
Given the size and scope of the projects designed for Atlantic Station, the energy plant was planned for 2 phases. The first phase was to provide enough capacity for the first decade of development while the second phase will serve any future development. The most difficult aspect with this project was the substantial amount of coordination between the engineering designers and the subcontractors. Rett did an excellent job of managing the process and the result is a very attractive facility for an exciting community.
Given the performance by Gunn Construction and Development, Inc. on this relatively complex building type and combine that with his continued work on other projects designed by our office, I have no problem recommending Rett’s company for your future project.
